Strip Plank Kayaks and Canoes

Strip planking is a system used to construct light weight and attractive canoes and kayaks. In strip planking a series of moulds are assembled to create the shape of the boat being built. The strips of timber are glued edge to edge and are temporarily fastened to the moulds. Once the shape of the canoe has been created the outside of the hull is sanded and a layer of fiberglass set in epoxy is applied.

The moulds are then removed and a layer of fiberglass is applied to the interior side of the hull.

Clear resin can be applied to enhance the beauty of the timber, contrasting timber can also be used during construction to personalize the design.

When the hull is complete internal fit-out is done, this can include the installation of thwarts and seats, gunwales or a cock pit coaming depending of the style of canoe or kayak being built.

Strip planking can be a relatively fast construction method which creates a strong and light weight vessel.

The links attached below have examples of the type of craft that we can build.
